Mount Yale Hike
Join your fellow Yalies to hike our namesake 14er on Saturday, August 8, 2026!
2026 is a special year - the 250th birthday of the United States, the 150th birthday of Colorado, and, most importantly, the 325th birthday of Yale College. We will celebrate by climbing Mount Yale this summer.
The hike leader will be CYA President Dave Belin ‘92, 14er Finisher who has hiked Mount Yale 4 times. We will plan to meet at the Denny Creek trailhead at 5:15am on August 8th.
Participants should be in reasonably good hiking shape, but Mount Yale is a friendly peak for first timer 14er hikers. The route is 9.5 miles round trip (out and back) and 4,200 feet of elevation gain. It is rated a class 2, which means, for the last 200 vertical feet of the hike, there is no longer a formal trail; you might need to put your hands down once or twice for balance. No specialized climbing gear is required and there is no major exposure for those intimidated by heights.
Choices for lodging the night prior are to camp at the Collegiate Peaks campground, stay at a hotel in Buena Vista, or even drive up that morning from the Front Range.
Post-hike, we will plan to meet in Buena Vista for a celebratory beverage and snack before heading home.
If you are interested, please email Dave at davebelin@gmail.com. He can answer questions and help with training ideas.

Yale Day of Service - Grow Local Colorado
Come join us in celebrating the Yale Day of Service with Grow Local Colorado on Saturday morning, May 30, 2026, as we help turn a blank garden plot into a productive community food garden.
Grow Local Colorado builds and maintains vegetable gardens across the Denver area, growing fresh produce for local communities and helping connect people to food, gardening, and service. This is always one of the most satisfying volunteer projects because the group starts with an open garden space and, in just a few hours, helps bring it to life.
Yale volunteers will help with weeding, planting seedlings, and planting seeds at Grow Local Colorado’s large garden at 2365 W. Mexico Ave. in Denver. No gardening expertise is required. Just come ready to work outside, get your hands dirty, and help create something tangible.
We are looking for approximately 15 volunteers. Families are encouraged, and children are welcome if they are at least 7 years old.
Volunteers should wear long sleeves, long pants, a sun hat, and closed-toed shoes for sun and foot protection. Please bring water. Snacks will be provided.
Please RSVP here.
Location: 2365 W. Mexico Ave., Denver, CO 80223

Yale Day of Service - Thorne Nature Experience
Come join us in celebrating the Yale Day of Service with Thorne Nature Experience at the Lafayette Nature Center on Saturday, May 9, 2026 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
We are looking for up to 15 volunteers who enjoy the out of doors and getting their hands in the soil.
Thorne has been helping Colorado children and families build joyful, hands-on connections with nature for decades, using outdoor education to inspire curiosity, confidence, and lifelong environmental stewardship. This year, Yale volunteers will help support Thorne’s Lafayette Nature Center with a mix of meaningful outdoor projects, including erosion-control work, trench filling and leveling, weeding, and kid-friendly cobblestone moving near the bioswale/play creek area.
Families are warmly welcome — including little ones. Some projects will involve heavier digging and landscaping work, while others will be lighter and perfect for children who want to help, explore, and play nearby while parents volunteer.
Please bring water and a sack lunch if you’d like to stay for a picnic afterward by Coal Creek.
Location: 300 Old Laramie Trail, Lafayette, CO 80026
Time: 10:00 AM–1:00 PM

Red Path Lecture - Professor Paul Freedman
Gather with your Colorado Yale community for an evening with Professor Paul Freedman. His topic will be "What is American Cuisine?" Join us on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. at the Golden History Museum for this excellent event and lecture.
Everyone can identify key aspects of Italian or Japanese cuisine, but is there such a thing as American cuisine? Most of the world thinks American taste can be simply identified with fast food. Professor Freedman’s talk is an effort to show that the picture is both richer and more complex, identifying characteristics of American food preference and how they have evolved over the past two hundred years.
This event is part of Yale's signature Redpath Lecture series and always attracts a large and diverse gathering of Yalies. Alumni, parents and friends of the Yale community are all welcome.
The evening will begin at 6:00 pm with light bites, beer, and wine followed by remarks at 6:30 pm. This event will also serve as our annual meeting.
Fee: $25.00
Pay with PayPal using the button below, or if you prefer to pay via check, please RSVP to Heather Hill and mail your check to the Colorado Yale Association, Box 911, Denver, Colorado, 80201.
Once you have RSVP'd you will check in at the event when you arrive. No physical tickets will be issued.
We know that schedules sometimes change. The last day we will be able to fulfill requests for refunds (excluding the PayPal service fee) is April 4, 2025.
The Redpath Lecture will take place at the Golden History Museum in Golden, CO. This cool little museum seeks to create a community that lives and loves its history. What better place could there be to welcome Professor Freedman who has served as Yale Director of Undergraduate Studies in History, Director of the Medieval Studies Program, Chair of the History Department, and Chair of the Program in the History of Science and Medicine.
Professor Freedman has also written extensively on food and culinary history including Food: The History of Taste, an illustrated collection of essays about food from prehistoric to contemporary times, Out of the East: Spices and the Medieval Imagination, Ten Restaurants That Changed America, and Why Food Matters which describes why food is important for reasons of cultural identity, memory, and orientation in the world. His most recent book is (co-authored with Marc Aronson) Bite by Bite: American History through Feasts, Food, and Side Dishes. This children's book offers an introduction to American history through specific historical meals and venues such as soda fountains, Italian restaurant and Native American celebrations that show the range of creativity as well as conflict over many centuries.
This will be a fun evening, we hope you will join us!
